pentateuch はギリシャ語 penta-（5）＋ teukhos（巻物・書物）に由来し、「5つの書」を原義とします。つまり聖書の最初の五書をそのまま数で呼んだ語で、意味が形に直結しています。関連語に pentagon, pentathlon があります。
Pentateuch comes from Greek penta- meaning "five" and teukhos meaning "book" or "scroll." It passed through late Latin and French into English.
