Pentecost は教会ラテン語 Pentecoste を経て、ギリシャ語 pentekoste「50番目の（日）」に由来します。語根 pente は「5」を表し、過越祭から50日目の祭りを指したためこの名になりました。同根語に pentagon、penta- があります。
Pentecost came into English through Old English and Church Latin Pentecoste, from Greek pentēkostē, meaning “fiftieth.” The expression referred to the fiftieth day after Passover and was used for the Jewish Feast of Weeks. Christians applied the name to the feast held on the fiftieth day of the Easter season. Its numerical base is related to Greek pente, “five,” also visible in English formations such as pentagon and the prefix penta-.
