A phaeton is a light four-wheeled horse-drawn carriage, typically open or fitted with a removable top and intended for personal driving. It was especially fashionable among wealthy users in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for travel and leisurely outings.

使い方 Usage

  • 一台なら a phaeton。drive a phaetonは「フェートンを御する」、ride in a phaetonは「フェートンに乗る」です。 Use a phaeton for one carriage. Drive a phaeton means to control it; ride in a phaeton means to travel in it.

phaeton の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ギリシャ神話の太陽神ヘリオスの息子ファエトン(Phaethōn)に由来。ギリシャ語 phaethōn は「輝く者」の意で、動詞 phainein(光る)が語根。関連語に phantom(幻影)、phenomenon(現象)がある。後に軽量四輪馬車の名称にも転用された。

The carriage name phaeton was taken from Phaethon, the son of the sun god Helios in Greek mythology, who tried to drive his father’s chariot. Greek Phaethōn means “shining” or “radiant” and is related to phainein, “to bring to light” or “to cause to appear.” The mythological name was later transferred to a stylish light carriage, probably because of its association with driving a splendid celestial vehicle.
