A pirouette is a fast turn on one foot, especially in ballet and other forms of dance. It can also refer more generally to a smooth spinning movement. The word is most common in artistic or performance contexts.

Pirouette entered English from French pirouette. It probably comes from a Gallo-Romance root pir-, referring to a peg or pivot, with the small-form ending -ette. The central image is turning around an axis, which led naturally to the ballet sense of a spinning movement on one leg.
