多元主義
解説 Definition
多元主義とは、複数の異なるグループ、文化、思想、または権力が社会内に共存できるという哲学または政治的立場。多様性を尊重し、少数派の権利を認め、異なる見方の統合を目指す。統一性よりも多様性を重視する原理である。
Pluralism is the idea or system that different groups, beliefs, or ways of life can exist together in one society. It is often used when talking about politics, religion, culture, or social values.

plural を知っていれば核は「複数」。英語で名詞の複数形を plural forms と言う感覚を土台にすると、pluralism は「複数であることを認める主義」と自然につながります。単なる diversity（多様性がある状態）ではなく、異なる集団・価値観・権力が並び立つべきだという立場を表す語です。monism のような「一つにまとめる発想」と対比すると定着しやすく、political pluralism, religious pluralism という連語でもよく出ます。
