赤道と温帯の間に位置し、冬も比較的温暖で夏は暑く湿度が高い気候帯です。年間を通じて降水量があり、霜が少ないのが特徴です。
Subtropical describes a climate or region that is very warm and lies just outside the tropical zone. It is commonly used in geography and weather, often for places with hot summers and mild winters.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず tropical＝「熱帯の」を軸に置き、sub- が「下・やや不足」を表す接頭辞だと押さえると、subtropical は「熱帯そのものではないが、かなり熱帯寄り」と覚えやすいです。subway, submarine などの sub- と同系統だと思うと定着します。climate, region, forest と結びつきやすく、subtropical climate と見たら高温多湿寄りの気候を連想。tropical より少し穏やか、temperate よりずっと暖かい、という位置関係で覚えると混同しにくいです。

subtropical は sub-「下・やや下」+ tropical「熱帯の」から成る語です。tropic はギリシャ語 tropē「向きを変える」に由来し、太陽が回帰点で折り返す発想から生まれたので、その少し外側の帯が「亜熱帯」と理解でき、関連語に tropic, trope があります。
Subtropical is made from sub-, meaning "under" or "somewhat below," and tropical. Tropic comes from Greek trope, meaning "a turn," referring to the points where the sun seems to turn back in the sky.
