Polyphony is a style of music in which two or more separate melodies are played or sung at the same time. It is often used when talking about classical, choral, or traditional music, and it focuses on how independent musical lines sound together.

telephone の phone、symphony の phony と同じ「音・声」の感覚を使い、poly- を「複数」と見れば、polyphony は「多くの声が同時にある音楽」とつかめる。ポイントは、ただ大勢で同じ旋律を歌うのでなく、各声部がそれぞれ独立して動くこと。バッハのフーガや合唱のソプラノ・アルト・テノール・バスが別々に進む場面を思い浮かべると定着しやすい。symphony は「交響曲」で作品名寄り、polyphony は書法・響き方の語。
