単細胞の真核生物の総称で、アメーバやゾウリムシなどが含まれる微小な生物群。
Protozoa are very small living things made of only one cell. They usually live in water or inside other living things, and they are studied in biology. Some are harmless, while others can cause disease. The word is plural.

protozoa はギリシャ語 protos「最初の」+ zoion「動物」に由来し、文字通りは「最初の動物たち」です。顕微鏡で見える単純な生物を原始的な動物と考えた名残で、関連語に prototype と zoology があります。
