脈動する
解説 Definition
pulsing は pulse の現在分詞・動名詞です。光・音・血液などが繰り返し強まったり弱まったり、脈打つように動いたりする様子を表します。
Pulsing is the present participle or gerund of pulse. It describes light, sound, blood, or another force repeatedly becoming stronger and weaker, moving in rhythmic bursts, or producing a beat-like sensation.
使い方 Usage
- A light was pulsing のように進行形で使い、光などが脈動している様子を表せます。 Use a progressive form such as A light was pulsing to describe light or something else pulsing at a particular time.
- feel the blood pulsing のように「feel+対象+pulsing」で、血液などが脈打つのを感じることを表せます。 Feel followed by an object and pulsing describes sensing a rhythmic movement: feel the blood pulsing.
使い分け Common distinctions
- flashing が明滅を表すのに対し、pulsing は鼓動や波のように強弱を繰り返す印象を与えることがあります。 Flashing describes flashes or alternation between on and off; pulsing can suggest a rhythmic rise and fall like a heartbeat or wave.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
心臓の pulse「脈拍」と結び付け、光や音にも鼓動のようなリズムがあると想像しましょう。pulse の末尾の e を落として -ing を付けると pulsing になります。
Connect pulsing with the heartbeat, or pulse, and imagine light or sound following a similar rhythm. Drop the final e of pulse before adding -ing to form pulsing.

pulsing の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語の「押す・打つ」を意味する語根puls-(動詞pulsare)に由来します。「繰り返し押し出す」様子から心臓や機械の振動リズムに転じ、「-ing」でその継続状態を表します。同族語のpulse(脈拍)やimpulse(衝動)も、「内側から押される力」というコアイメージを共有します。
Pulsing is formed from pulse by dropping the final e and adding -ing. Pulse entered English through French and Latin pulsus, “a beating or pushing,” from pellere, “to drive or strike.” The related Latin verb pulsare conveyed repeated striking or beating. This history fits the modern image of recurrent pressure, sound, light, or movement. Words such as impulse share the broader Latin idea of a push, though their modern meanings have developed differently.
