解説 Definition
食べ物や胃酸が逆流して胸や喉に焼けるような不快感が生じる症状です。胃酸が食道の粘膜を刺激することで起き、胸の中央あたりが熱く感じられることが多いです。食後すぐや横になると悪化しやすいです。
Heartburn is a burning feeling in the chest caused by stomach acid moving upward. It often happens after eating certain foods or eating too much. The pain is not usually related to the heart, even though the name sounds that way.

heart は古英語 heorte、さらに印欧祖語 kerd-「心」にさかのぼる。burn は古英語 beornan「燃える」で、heartburn は心臓が燃えることではなく、胸の奥が焼ける感覚をそのまま名づけた語。cardiac や cordial も同じ heart 系の語根を引く。
