purview は英語の view に見えますが、実は英仏語 purveue「規定・条項」由来です。さらにラテン語 providere（pro-「前もって」+ videre「見る」）にさかのぼり、「あらかじめ定められた範囲」から「権限・管轄」の意味になりました。関連語は provide, provision。
