覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
quote の語末の e を落として -ing を付けると quoting になります。本の一文をそのまま写し、引用元を添える場面を思い浮かべましょう。
Drop the final silent e in quote before adding -ing: quote becomes quoting. Picture copying a sentence exactly from a book and identifying its source.

quoting の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 quotare(章番号を付ける)から古フランス語 coter を経て英語に入った。語根の quot- は「いくつ」を意味する拉語 quot に由来し、原義は文章の該当箇所を番号で示すこと。関連語: quota(割当)、quotation(引用文)。番号で参照する行為が「他者の言葉を引く」意味に発展した。
Quoting is formed from quote by dropping the final silent e and adding -ing. Quote entered English through French forms related to Medieval Latin quotāre, meaning to mark or number divisions or references in a text. This verb was connected with Latin quot, “how many.” The practice of identifying a precise numbered passage developed into the modern idea of citing or repeating words from a particular source.
