rebuttals
反論
解説 Definition
反論、異議、反対意見。提示された論点や主張に対する反対の議論や証拠を指します。
Rebuttals are statements or arguments made to oppose and answer another claim. They are common in debates, discussions, law, and formal writing. A rebuttal tries to show that the other side is wrong or incomplete.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず単数形 rebuttal を核に覚え、rebuttals は『反論が複数ある状態』と押さえる。討論や法廷で、相手の claim や evidence に対して一つずつ返していく場面を思い浮かべると定着しやすい。単なる『別意見』ではなく、相手の論点への具体的な反駁。offer rebuttals, hear rebuttals to the accusation などの形で覚えると使い所が見える。objection はその場の異議、rebuttal は主張への反論内容。refute は『論破する』動詞寄り。
Remember the singular form `rebuttal` first, then `rebuttals` simply means more than one. This word fits debates, court cases, and arguments where someone answers specific points one by one. It is more focused than just "another opinion." Compare it with `objection` and `refute` so the role of the word becomes clearer.

rebuttals の語源・成り立ち Etymology
英仏語 rebut(反駁する)+ 接尾辞 -al の複数形。re-(再び)+ 古仏語 boter(打つ、押し返す)が語源で「押し返す行為」が原義。法律用語として相手の主張を打ち返す反論を指す。関連語: rebut, rebuttal。
Rebuttals comes from rebuttal, built from rebut and the noun ending -al. Rebut came through Anglo-French from re- and Old French boter, "to strike" or "push," so the original image was of pushing something back. In later use, especially in legal English, it came to mean answering an argument by striking back against it.
