ラテン語 recipere（受け取る）の命令形 recipe（受け取れ）が語源。re-（再び）＋ capere（取る）の合成語で、receive（受け取る）やcapture（捕える）と同根。元は医師が処方箋の冒頭に書いた指示語で、「材料を受け取って調合せよ」から料理の調理法の意味に転じた。
