To refract means to bend light, sound, or another wave as it passes through a different material. This word is common in science, especially in physics and optics. For example, light refracts when it moves from air into water or glass.

refract は、fract を含む語をまとめて覚えると残りやすいです。fracture が「折る・壊す」、fraction が「分ける」なら、refract は光の進み方がまっすぐのままではなく“折れたように曲がる”感じ。特に light refracts through water/glass や refract light の形で見ると定着します。紛らわしい reflect は「はね返る」、refract は「通り抜けながら曲がる」。refraction もセットで覚えると強いです。
Notice the `fract` part, also seen in `fracture` and `fraction`, which gives the idea of breaking or bending. In `refract`, think of light no longer going straight, as if its path is bent. Keep the contrast clear: `reflect` bounces back, but `refract` passes through and bends.

refractはラテン語refringere「折り返して砕く・曲げる」にさかのぼり、re-「後ろへ・再び」+ frangere「折る」から成ります。光がまっすぐ進まず“折れ曲がる”イメージがそのまま「屈折する」になり、関連語にrefraction、fractureがあります。
