refractor はラテン語 refringere（後ろへ曲げる）にさかのぼり、re-「後ろへ」+ frangere「折る・砕く」から成ります。光を「曲げ返す」装置だと分かると意味がつかみやすく、fraction や fragile も同じ語根 frang-/fract- の仲間です。
