音楽において、異なる音が組み合わさったときに調和して聞こえる状態。協和音は不協和音の対比となる概念で、耳に心地よく感じられる音の組み合わせを指します。
Consonance is a combination of sounds that feels pleasant, smooth, or harmonious. It is often used in music to describe notes that sound stable together, and in language to describe repeated consonant sounds. The opposite idea in music is usually called dissonance.

consonance はラテン語 consonantia に由来し、con-「共に」+ sonare「鳴る」から成る語です。文字どおり「一緒に響くこと」なので、音楽で複数の音が調和して聞こえる協和音の意味が腑に落ちます。sound や sonorous も同じ音の語根です。
