resembling の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古フランス語 resembler(似ている)から。接頭辞 re-(再び)+ sembler(似る)で構成され、sembler はラテン語 simulare(模倣する)に由来する。similar(類似の)や simulate(模擬する)と同根で、「再び同じように見える」が原義。
Resembling is the -ing form of resemble, with the final silent e removed before the suffix is added. Resemble entered English through Old French resembler, formed from re- and sembler, “to seem or appear.” Sembl(er) ultimately reflects Latin simulare, “to imitate or make like,” related to Latin similis, “like.” This history connects resemble with modern words such as similar and simulate.
