saltpeterは中世ラテン語sal petrae「岩の塩」に由来し、saltとpeterに見えても実はsal「塩」＋petra「岩」です。salineやpetroleumと同じ根を思い出すと、『岩から採れる塩類』が硝石を指すようになった流れが見えてきます。
Saltpeter comes from Medieval Latin sal petrae, literally "salt of rock." Although it looks like modern English salt + peter, the second part actually goes back to Latin petra, meaning "rock." The name first meant a mineral salt found on or from stone, and later became the usual word for niter.
