シニフィアンは記号の物理的形態（音声や文字など）を指す。ソシュール の記号理論では、表現される意味（シニフィエ）に対して、表現する側の形態要素である。
A signifier is a word, sound, image, or other form that stands for an idea or meaning. It is used in language study, media, and theory to discuss how meaning is communicated through signs.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
signifier はまず sign「しるし」の仲間としてつかむと記憶しやすい。signify「意味する・示す」を知っていれば、-er が付いて「示す側のもの」。ただし示しているのは意味内容そのものではなく、音・文字・画像など目や耳に入る形の側だと押さえる。対語の signified が「示される意味」なので、両者は必ずセットで確認する。speech sound や written word のように、“外に現れたラベル”を指す語として結びつけると、記号論で混同しにくい。

signifier は signify + -er「…するもの」。signify は古フランス語を経てラテン語 significare に由来し、signum「しるし」+ facere「作る」で、もともと「しるしによって示す」です。だから signifier は「意味を示す側」で、signal や significant も同根です。
Signifier comes from signify + -er, meaning "something that signifies." Signify came through Old French from Latin significare, built from signum "mark, sign" and facere "to make." The original idea was "to make known by a sign," which led to the modern sense of something that carries meaning; signal and significant are related words.
