覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
spice は料理に香りや風味を加える植物由来の「香辛料」です。add spice to ~、a sweet spice、a spice blend のように料理場面と結び付けましょう。herb が葉の部分を生または乾燥して使うことが多いのに対し、spice は種・樹皮・根なども含みます。spicy は「香辛料の効いた」で、必ずしも単に「熱い」ではありません。
Picture a cook adding a small amount of a strongly flavored plant ingredient to food. Spice commonly refers to materials such as seeds, bark, roots, or dried fruits, and appears in phrases like add spice to the soup, a sweet spice, and a spice blend. Compare it with herb: herbs are often the leafy parts of plants, while spices can come from several other parts. Also connect spice with spicy, meaning flavored with or containing spice; spicy food may be pungent or hot, but the idea begins with seasoning rather than temperature.

spice の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 species(種類・外見)から古フランス語 espice を経て英語に。元は「種類」の意で、特定の種類の香料を指すようになった。関連語: special, species。商品を「種類」で分類した際、香辛料が代表的品目だったことに由来する。
Spice entered English through Old French espice, from Late Latin species in a specialized sense referring to kinds of merchandise or goods. Latin species originally meant a kind, form, or appearance. In medieval trade, the term became associated particularly with valuable aromatic plant products and seasonings, leading to the modern meaning. Species and special share the same broader Latin family, although their present-day meanings have developed along different paths.
