Definition
Expelling saliva, food, seeds, or another substance from the mouth, often with some force. As the -ing form of spit, it can describe the action in progress or name the activity itself, especially when discussing public behavior.
Memory Tip
Spitting comes from spit + -ing. Because spit has a short stressed vowel followed by one final consonant, double the t before adding -ing. Keep the physical image of something being forcefully expelled from the mouth. A person may be spitting on the ground or spitting out watermelon seeds, while a threatened llama may start spitting at people. Useful patterns are spit out something, spit at someone, and spitting in public. The last is often described as rude and unhygienic. The same image extends figuratively to rain, sparks, or fire being thrown out in small bursts.

Etymology
関連語:spit(串、突き刺す棒)、spew(吐き出す)。
Spitting is the -ing form of spit, with the final t doubled by the usual spelling rule for a short stressed vowel plus one consonant. The verb spit descends from Old English spittan and has close relatives in other Germanic languages. It originally referred to ejecting saliva from the mouth. English later extended the same forceful, scattering image to seeds and other objects from the mouth, as well as to rain, sparks, and fire emitted in small bursts.
