stunner は stun に -er が付いた語で、stun は古フランス語 estoner、俗ラテン語 extonare「雷のように打つ」に由来します。astonish や stunning も同根で、「雷に打たれたようにぼうぜんとさせる」という核から「衝撃を与える人」になったと見えます。
Stunner comes from stun plus the ending -er. Stun comes through Old French estoner from a Vulgar Latin form meaning "to strike with thunder." The central idea was being hit so hard that you are left dazed, and from that it developed into a person or thing that causes strong shock or admiration. It is related to astonish and stunning.
