subprime の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 sub(下に)+ prime(第一の、最良の)の合成語で、「最優良より下の」が原義。prime はラテン語 primus(最初の)に由来する。関連語に primary(主要な)、primitive(原始的な)がある。2007年の住宅ローン危機で、信用力の低い借り手向け融資を指す用語として広く知られるようになった。
Subprime is a modern financial formation from the prefix sub-, meaning “below” or “under,” and prime, meaning first-rate or belonging to the highest credit category. Prime ultimately comes from Latin primus, “first.” The compound therefore means below prime credit quality. It became especially prominent in discussions of mortgage lending and the financial crisis of 2007–2008, but its structure applies more generally to loans and borrowers assessed as having weaker creditworthiness.
