近代ラテン語 suicidium から。ラテン語 sui（自分自身の）+ -cidium（殺すこと、caedere 切る・殺すに由来）の合成語。同じ -cide を持つ語に homicide（殺人）、insecticide（殺虫剤）がある。「自らを殺す行為」を直訳的に組み合わせた造語で、17世紀英語に定着した。
Suicide comes from Modern Latin suicidium, formed from sui, "of oneself," and -cidium, "killing," from caedere, "to kill" or "cut." It was built as a literal learned term for "the killing of oneself." English adopted it in the 17th century, and the same ending appears in homicide and insecticide.
