sunken は古英語 sincan「沈む」から来た sink の過去分詞形で、-en は古い強変化動詞に残る語尾です。『下へ落ち込んだ状態』の像がそのまま意味になり、sink や unsinkable が近い仲間です。
Sunken comes from sink, whose history reaches back to Old English sincan, “to sink or become submerged.” It preserves the -en ending found in participles of several strong Germanic verbs. Although sunk is now the usual past participle in verb phrases, sunken remains established as an adjective describing something submerged or lowered. Its changed vowel reflects the irregular pattern also seen in sink, sank, and sunk.
