Suzerainty is a political relationship in which a stronger state controls another state's foreign affairs or overall authority while allowing it some internal independence. It is mainly a historical and legal term, often used when discussing empires and unequal power relations.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず語尾の -ty を見て「性質・権利を表す名詞」と押さえると、authority, sovereignty と同じ箱に入れられます。次に suzerain（宗主）+ -ty で「宗主であること、宗主としての権能」。覚えるときは sovereignty が自国を主権として治める力なのに対し、suzerainty は他国を従属させつつ一定の自治は残す関係だと対比すると定着しやすいです。歴史文脈で over a smaller state, tributary relationship などと結びつけると使う場面も思い出せます。
Notice the ending `-ty`, like in `authority` or `sovereignty`, which often marks an abstract noun about power or status. `Suzerainty` is easier to remember by comparing it with `sovereignty`: not full direct rule, but control over a smaller state. Think of an empire allowing limited local freedom.

suzerainty はフランス語 suzerainete からで、suzerain「宗主」+ -ty に当たります。suzerain には古フランス語 sus「上に」〈ラテン語 sursum「上方へ」〉が含まれます。関連語は suzerain。つまり「上に立つ者の権能」がそのまま「宗主権」です。
Suzerainty comes from French suzerainete, based on suzerain, meaning an overlord. Suzeraain itself contains an old French element meaning "above," from Latin sursum, "upward." The word therefore originally expressed the authority of someone placed above others; the related English word is suzerain.
