Memory Tip
一般的な dog ではなく、a white talbot、a talbot in heraldry のように歴史的な犬種・紋章動物として覚えます。
Remember two historically connected uses. A lowercase talbot is a large hunting hound seen in old heraldry, often depicted as white on a family crest. Capitalized Talbot is an English surname, as in William Henry Fox Talbot, a pioneer of photography. The contrast in capitalization helps: a talbot may appear on a shield, while Talbot identifies a person or family. Because the dog is extinct, avoid using the word as an ordinary modern breed name; expect it mainly in discussions of medieval hunting, heraldic symbols, genealogy, and history.

Etymology
The dog name talbot developed from the surname Talbot and became established in medieval and heraldic usage for a type of hunting hound. The ultimate origin of the surname is uncertain, and several explanations have been proposed, including derivation from a Germanic personal name. Talbot also survives as a family name, while terms connected with Fox Talbot’s photographic work derive from his surname rather than directly from the hound.
