tantalus
タンタロス(神話)
解説 Definition
ギリシャ神話の人物。タンタロスの懲罰と欲求不満。
In Greek mythology, Tantalus is a king condemned to perpetual frustration, traditionally standing near water and fruit that withdraw whenever he tries to reach them. His punishment symbolizes an unattainable desire.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
神話の Tantalus は、水中に立ちながら水を飲めず、頭上の果実にも届かない罰を受ける人物として覚える。「欲しい物が目前にあるのに得られない」という場面が核心で、そこから tantalize「期待させてじらす」へつながる。人名なので通常は Tantalus と大文字で書く。
Picture Tantalus surrounded by exactly what he needs: water below him and fruit above him. Each time he tries to drink or eat, both move beyond his reach. That scene fixes the central idea of endless frustration caused by something desirable but unattainable. It also gives you a reliable bridge to tantalize, meaning to excite someone’s desire while keeping satisfaction just out of reach. Because Tantalus is a mythological personal name, capitalize it in normal English.

tantalus の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ神話の王 Τάνταλος(タンタロス)に由来。神々の食物を盗み、罰として水と果実に手が届かない責め苦を受けた。この逸話から英語 tantalize(じらす、焦らす)が生まれた。元素タンタル(Ta)も、酸に溶けない性質をこの渇望になぞらえて命名された。
The name comes through Latin Tantalus from Greek Tantalos, the name of a mythological king punished in the underworld. His unreachable water and fruit later inspired the English verb tantalize. The element tantalum was also named with reference to Tantalus because the metal was described as unable to become “satiated” by acid. The ultimate origin of the Greek personal name itself is uncertain.
