taxicab
Definition
A taxicab is a car licensed to carry passengers to requested destinations in return for a fare, usually calculated by a meter or an app. Taxi is the more common everyday shortened form, while taxicab can sound more formal or descriptive.
Memory Tip
take a taxicab、call a taxicab、yellow taxicab
Break taxicab into the familiar words taxi and cab, but remember that the full form historically shortens taximeter cab, a cab equipped with a device for calculating the fare. Imagine a yellow car stopping at a hotel while its meter records the journey. Useful combinations include take a taxicab, call a taxicab, and hail a taxicab. In ordinary conversation, taxi is generally more frequent and natural; taxicab is a fuller, somewhat more formal or descriptive term, especially associated with American English. Both refer to the same type of hired passenger vehicle.

Etymology
Taxicab is a shortened form of taximeter cab. Taximeter came through French taximètre and combines an element relating to a charge or tariff with meter, a measuring device. Cab is itself shortened from cabriolet, originally a light horse-drawn carriage. As motor vehicles replaced horse-drawn cabs, taxicab became the name for a hired car fitted with a fare meter. The still shorter form taxi subsequently became the usual everyday term.
