解説 Definition
タキシングは航空用語で、飛行機が地上で低速で自力走行することです。飛行機は滑走路に向かう際や滑走路から離れる際に、パイロットがエンジンの推力を制御して移動させます。空港内での安全で効率的な移動に不可欠な操縦手順です。

taxiing は taxi＋進行形 -ing で、taxi はフランス語 taximètre 由来の taxicab から縮まった語です。taximeter や taxicab と同根で、「料金計で走る車」の名が転じ、飛行機が地上を車のように走ることを表すようになりました。
Taxiing comes from taxi, which is a shortened form of taxicab, from French taximètre. That word meant a vehicle fitted with a fare meter, and it is related to taximeter and taxicab. The aviation sense came later, when an airplane moving along the ground was compared to a cab driving on the street.
