terpene は化学語で、古い名 terebene を縮めた形です。さらに turpentine「テレビン油」の語源である terebinth にさかのぼり、-ene は炭化水素を示す語尾。terpenoid や turpentine と並べると、「樹脂・精油由来の化合物」という意味が見えます。
Terpene is a chemistry word shortened from older terebene. It goes back further to terebinth and turpentine, words connected with resin-producing trees.
