Transitivity is a quality of a relationship where one connection continues through another. In logic or math, if A is related to B and B is related to C, then A is also related to C. The word is also used in grammar for how verbs connect to objects.

transitivity は transitive を知っていると入りやすい。trans- を含む語は transport, transfer のように「何かが向こうへ渡る」感覚が共通し、この語も「関係が先へ渡る性質」と置くと残る。数学・論理では AとBに成り立ち、BとCにも成り立つなら、AとCにも成り立つ性質。まず transitive relation という形で覚えるとよい。文法の transitive verb「他動詞」と語形は同じでも、ここでは「目的語を取る」話ではない点に注意。

transitivity は transitive＋接尾辞 -ity でできた語です。transitive は後期ラテン語 transitivus にさかのぼり、trans-「越えて」＋ ire「行く」で、もとは「向こうへ渡る」の意なので、作用が目的語へ渡る性質から「推移性」になります。関連語は transit, transition です。
Transitivity comes from transitive plus the noun suffix -ity. Transitive goes back to late Latin transitivus, from trans- "across" and ire "to go." The basic sense is "going across," and in grammar and logic it developed into the idea of an action or relation passing over to another thing, as in transit and transition.
