古英語 þuruh（通り抜けて）に由来する thorough に副詞語尾 -ly が付いた語。through と同語源で「最初から最後まで貫き通す」が原義。同根語に through（～を通って）がある。端から端まで通り抜けるほど完全にやる、という感覚が「徹底的に」の意味を生んだ。
