timber は古英語 timbr「建物・建築材」にさかのぼり、さらにゲルマン祖語 *timrą を経て「組み立てられたもの」の感覚をもちました。もとは家を建てる材料の木を指したため、今の「木材」という意味になりました。関連語は domestic, domain。
