timber の語源・成り立ち Etymology
timber は古英語 timbr「建物・建築材」にさかのぼり、さらにゲルマン祖語 *timrą を経て「組み立てられたもの」の感覚をもちました。もとは家を建てる材料の木を指したため、今の「木材」という意味になりました。関連語は domestic, domain。
"Timber" comes from Old English "timbr," which first meant "building" or "building material," not just wood. It goes back to a Germanic root with the idea of constructing or putting together. Over time, the word narrowed to the wood used for building, and then to wood prepared as a material.
