覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず tingle を「ピリピリ感が走る」として覚え、tingling はその感覚が続いている状態と捉えると整理しやすいです。-ing が付くので、一瞬ではなくじわっと広がる感じが出ます。よく fingers, hands, skin, lips など体の部位と一緒に使われ、My hands are tingling. の形が頻出です。numb が「感覚が鈍い・ない」のに対し、tingling はむしろ細かい刺激を感じている点が違います。寒さや正座のあとに感覚が戻る場面を思い浮かべると定着しやすいです。
Learn the base verb `tingle` first, then `tingling` is the continuing feeling. The `-ing` form makes it sound like a sensation that spreads for a while, not one quick moment. Compare it with `numb`: numb means less feeling, but tingling means small active feeling.
例文
After sitting in one position for too long, her leg started tingling.
長時間同じ姿勢で座った後、彼女の足はピリピリし始めた。
My fingertips are tingling from the cold.
寒さで指先がピリピリしている。
His skin was still tingling after the electric shock.
電気ショックの後も、彼の皮膚はまだピリピリしていた。

tingling の語源・成り立ち Etymology
tingling は tingle に進行・状態の -ing が付いた形です。tingle は中英語で「チンと鳴る」を表した擬音的な語から発達し、tinkle や ting も同系なので、細かく震える感じが「チクチクする」感覚へつながります。
Tingling comes from tingle with the ending -ing. Tingle developed from a Middle English sound-imitating word for a light ringing noise, and it is related to forms like ting and tinkle. From that sense of a small repeated sound or vibration, the word later came to describe a light prickling feeling.
