toque は中期フランス語 toque から英語へ入り、さらに古スペイン語 toca「頭を覆う布・かぶり物」にさかのぼります。語源の芯が「頭を覆うもの」なので、女性用の小帽子にもコック帽にも使われるのが納得できます。近い同族語にポルトガル語 touca があります。
Toque came into English from French toque. It goes back further to Spanish toca, meaning a cloth or covering for the head. The basic idea is "something worn over the head," which later narrowed into names for certain kinds of hats.
