「cuirass」はフランス語 cuirasse からで、語幹 cuir はラテン語 corium「革・皮」にさかのぼります。もとは革製の胴鎧を指したため、のちに金属の胸当てになっても『皮の防具』の名が残りました。coriaceous や currier も同じ語根です。
