totemic は totem に形容詞語尾 -ic が付いた語。totem はアルゴンキン語派、特にオジブウェ語 odoodem（一族・氏族のしるし）にさかのぼり、totemism と同根なので、「氏族の象徴に関わる」という意味だと腑に落ちます。
"Totemic" comes from totem plus the adjective ending -ic. Totem entered English from an Algonquian language, especially Ojibwe odoodem, meaning a clan or clan sign. The meaning developed from a family or clan marker to anything connected with a symbolic ancestral emblem; totemism shares the same root.
