transcendental はラテン語 trans-「越えて」+ scandere「登る」から生まれた transcend に由来します。境界をよじ登って越えるイメージが、「超越的な」という抽象的な意味を支えています。ascend と descend も同じ scend の仲間です。
Transcendental comes from transcend, which goes back to Latin trans- meaning "across" and scandere meaning "to climb." The original image is of climbing beyond a limit or boundary.
