Transcendentalism is a philosophical and literary movement that says people can find truth and meaning through personal insight, nature, and spiritual experience, not only through rules or tradition. It is especially connected with 19th-century American writers and thinkers. The term is mainly used in history, literature, and philosophy.

まず transcend を軸に覚える。trans- は transfer, transport と同じく「向こうへ・越えて」の感覚で、transcend は「限界や現実を超える」。そこに -ism が付くと capitalism, idealism と同じく「主義・思想」になるので、transcendentalism は「現実を超えた価値を重んじる思想」と組み立てられる。transcendental は形容詞、transcendence は名詞なので、語尾で品詞ごとまとめて覚えると混同しにくい。自然・精神・直観を重視する文脈と一緒に定着させると強い。
