embezzlement は古フランス語 embesilier「こっそり持ち去る」にさかのぼり、英語では embezzle + -ment で「横領という行為」。関連語 embezzle, embezzler と同じ語幹を持ち、外から盗む theft でなく「預かった物を内側で抜く」感じが残ります。
Embezzlement comes from embezzle plus the noun suffix -ment. Embezzle goes back through Anglo-French and Old French to a verb meaning to misuse, hide, or carry off secretly. The word developed to mean taking property that was already in one's care, which is why it differs in feeling from ordinary theft.
