trapezoidal は trapezoid に -al が付いた語で、語幹 trapez- はギリシャ語 trapeza「机・食卓」にさかのぼる。trapeze も同根で、上辺と下辺が平行な形が卓上板の輪郭を思わせるため、「台形の」という意味につながった。
Trapezoidal comes from trapezoid with the adjective ending -al. The root goes back to Greek trapeza, meaning "table" or "tabletop," and the same source also appears in trapeze. The shape name seems to have grown from a resemblance to a tabletop outline, and trapezoidal simply means "having the form of a trapezoid."
