Etymology
Tulsi comes from Sanskrit tulasī, the traditional name of the plant in South Asia. The Sanskrit name is commonly associated with the idea of being incomparable or unequalled, reflecting the plant’s honored position in Hindu tradition. English adopted the local plant name rather than creating a new descriptive term. Holy basil is the common English alternative used for the same culturally important herb.
