tuning は tune「調子を合わせる」に -ing が付いた語で、tune は古フランス語 ton を経てラテン語 tonus、さらにギリシャ語 tonos「張り・音調」にさかのぼります。もとは弦の張りを整える感覚で、そこから音程調整へ広がりました。tone, tonic も近縁です。
Tuning comes from tune + -ing. Tune came through Old French ton from Latin tonus and Greek tonos, which referred to tension, tone, or musical pitch. The original image was adjusting the tension of strings, and from that it developed into the idea of bringing sound into the right pitch; tone and tonic are related words.
