Etymology
Ump arose in American English as a shortening of umpire and became established in informal sports language during the nineteenth century. Umpire itself developed through redivision of Middle English a noumpere as an oumpere. The earlier form came from Old French nonper, literally a person “not equal” or not one of a pair, referring to an impartial third party. The modern clipped form preserves only the opening sound and letters of umpire.
