upend は up「上へ」と end「端」から成る語で、どちらも古英語にさかのぼる。19世紀に「端を上にする」がそのまま「ひっくり返す」へ広がった。関連語は end, endless。向きを逆転させる絵がそのまま意味になる。
Upend is built from the old English words up and end. Both parts go back to Old English, and the original idea was literally to put something on its end with that end pointing upward. From that physical image, the verb later came to mean turning something over completely.
