農村部から都市部への人口移動や、農業中心の社会から都市中心の産業社会への変化する過程。現代の社会発展において、多くの国が経験している大規模な構造的変化を指す。
Urbanisation is the process in which more people move to cities and towns, and these areas grow larger. It is commonly used in discussions about population change, development, and society.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
urban を知っていれば「都市のことに関わる変化」だと入りやすい語。名詞化の -isation は「〜化・〜していく過程」で、industrialisation, globalisation と同じ型で覚えると定着しやすい。point は city そのものではなく、「人・産業・機能が都市へ集中していく流れ」を表すこと。rapid urbanisation, urbanisation rate などでよく見かける。urbanism（都市主義・都市文化）や urbanized（都市化された）とは役割が違う。なお米語では urbanization と z になる綴り差にも注意。

urbanisation は urban＋-isation に分かれ、urban はラテン語 urbanus「都市の」に由来し、さらに urbs「都市」にさかのぼります。つまり「都市の性質を帯びること」が原義で、都市化の意味に自然につながります。関連語は urban, suburb。
