walkover は walk + over の複合語で、競走相手がいないため勝者がコースをただ歩いて通り過ぎればよかった、という競馬由来です。walk は古英語、over も古英語にさかのぼり、walkway や overtake と同じ基本語から「楽勝・棄権勝ち」が見えてきます。
Walkover is an English compound of walk and over. It comes from horse racing: if there was no real opponent, the winner only had to walk over the course to take the victory. From that literal situation, the word developed the wider sense of an easy win with little effort.
