水が急速に回転して渦を巻く現象。海や川で岩や障害物の周辺に発生し、小型船などが吸い込まれる危険性がある。

渦巻きとは、水や空気が中心に向かって回転しながら渦を描く現象です。中心付近では流れが非常に強くなり、船や人を強く吸い込むため危険なことが多いです。大きな海や川の他、浴槽の排水口のような小さな流れにも渦巻きができ得ます。
A whirlpool is a mass of water that spins around very quickly and pulls things toward its center. It is usually used for dangerous water in rivers, seas, or drains, and it can also describe any strong circular movement.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
whirl を「くるくる回る」、pool を「水・プール」と分けて見ると、「水が回転してできるもの」と自然に思い出しやすい。浴槽の排水口にできる小さな渦を、そのまま巨大で危険なものにした映像で覚えると定着する。単なる渦模様ではなく、water や current の中で物を引き込む渦を指すことが多いので、be caught in a whirlpool のような場面と結びつけると強い。whirlwind は風の渦、whirlpool は水の渦、という対比でも整理できる。
